David served as an Infantryman and Parachutist during the Vietnam era. His last duty assignment was Co A, 75th Ranger, 1st Cavalry Division, Ft Hood, Texas. David loved horses. Prior to joining the Army he was a jockey for Clyde Douglas "Bulldog" Turner, racing Quarter Horses all over Texas. David enjoyed traveling the country while remodeling Marriott hotels. While in Kentucky, David was a driver for local Amish, gaining the nick-name "Tex Byler" while driving for Marlin Byler. Most importantly, David never met a stranger and was always the life of the party. He was more than witty and could come off the cuff with some of the funniest things. David loved music trivia and watched Jeopardy daily. Due to his love of cowboy culture and fondness of horses he rode in the Great American Adventures, Wyatt Earp's Vendetta Ride, in Tombstone, AZ where he was affectionately known as "Lonesome Dave".
He was the son of the late Russell William Dowell and the late Georgia Mae Barron Dowell.
